What is Swine Flu? Swine Influenza or Swine Flu is caused by any strain of the influenza virus affecting pigs, known as Swine Influenza Virus (SIV). Swine Flu symptoms include chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, cough, weakness, and general discomfort.
The recent outbreak of Swine Flu in humans is starting to cause quite a scare. It was noted that the earliest human case was near a Mexican pig farm in La Gloria, Veracruz, Mexico. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that the Swine Flu symptoms and human to human transmission is much like that of seasonal flu. Swine Flu symptoms include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, cough, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is believed to be spread between humans through coughing or sneezing of infected people and touching something with the virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth. Swine flu cannot be spread by pork products, since the virus is not transmitted through food. The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness although some people, most commonly children, can remain contagious for up to ten days.
To prevent spread of the Swine Flue virus among humans, it is recommended to practice frequent handwashing and social distancing if an infection is spreading in a community. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).
